The four-ring brand presents the second era of the raging Audi R8 RWD rear-wheel drive. They will arrive in early 2020 with a power of 540 hp and in coupé and convertible versions.
About two years ago, with the R8 before restyling still on the market, Audi Sport surprised us all by launching a limited version of traction rear for the spectacular sports car V10. Now, with the model already renewed and with the concern that many of us have that the R8 may be about to disappear – at least, as we know it today -, the brand of the four rings has done it again. We have drawn another huge smile on the face presenting the new Audi R8 RWD 2019 rear-wheel drive (formerly called RWS), which are available in both coupé and convertible bodywork. What once looked like a complete heresy to the reputed quattro traction system, today has become a joyful reality that, in addition, will evolve to the concept of unicorn with the passage of not much time.

These new R8 RWDs go from being a limited edition to 999 units to be another variant within the R8 range. Of course, they adopt the aesthetic elements of the updated model, launched earlier this year, and maintain the sublime atmospheric 5.2-liter V10 located in the central rear position. In this case, it declares a power of 540 hp and 540 Nm of torque that go directly to the rear wheels by means of a seven-way S Tronic transmission and a mechanical self-locking differential. If we talk about performance, the R8 RWD Coupé is able to complete the 0-100 km / h in 3.7 seconds (one tenth faster than the Spyder) and reach a tip of 320 km / h (2 km / h more than the Spyder.)
The forged wheels of the R8 RWD are of exclusive design, have a size of 19 inches and mount tires 245/35 front and 295/35 behind. As an option, you can choose 20-inch wheels with sports tires that further improve grip and dynamics. According to Audi, “the distribution of weights per axle is 40:60. The Coupé version (empty and without driver) weighs only 1,595 kg. With no drive shaft, multi-disc clutch or front differential, it is about 65 kg lighter than the R8 V10 quattro. The R8 RWD Spyder is 100 kg heavier than its rigid roof brother. As in all R8, the body is made of aluminum with parts made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer. ”
The first units will arrive in early 2020 . Its starting price in Germany is 144,000 euros (157,000 euros if we prefer the Spyder.)
Along with this announcement, the German manufacturer has unveiled the new Audi R8 LMS GT4 for private pilots . It shares about 60% of parts with the R8 V10 quattro of production, dispenses a power of 495 hp and adds a fundamental improvement over the previous version that makes it more competitive. For the first time in an R8 LMS, the ABS system and traction control can be precisely adjusted using eight different programs that the rider can select individually during the races, depending on the weather, track conditions, adhesion of tires, etc.
To do this, as they explain, the Audi R8 LMS GT4 is equipped with the steering wheel of the GT2 version that incorporates the two rotary controls for the ABS and the TC located in the center. Since most racing series in the GT4 category prescribe driver changes, individual preferences can be selected simply and accurately, both before and after the pit stop.
